Moving Past the Past: A Guide for Adult Survivors of Childhood Sexual Abuse

Julie Poole – BSc, SQHP.

Moving Past the Past: A Guide for Adult Survivors of Childhood Abuse is my first non-fiction, self-help book, and is based on my fifteen years’ experience as a Hypnotherapist, my own experience and those of working with hundreds of clients. This book is about helping survivors and their families by raising awareness of the effects of CSA.

I found that there is very little out there to help victims/survivors and even less to help their family and friends to understand what their loved one is going through, or how to help them. That is the aim of this book. My hope is that survivors and their families will read it, and be helped by it, and that organisations and therapists who support survivors will buy it, loan it or recommend it to their clients. The damage that sexual abuse causes has enormous impacts, and the more that we can understand those impacts, not just individually, but collectively, as a society, the more we can help. That help can be one to one support and understanding, patience and kindness, and it can be raising awareness, removing stigma, preventing revictimisation and helping the survivors to feel and be stronger.

I specialise in working with clients who are experiencing issues due to their previous trauma and abuse. Many of my clients are not aware that their ‘issue’ is even linked to their abusive past! Symptoms which they present themselves to me with often include: Depression, anxiety, anger, loss, insecurity, self-destructive patterns, overprotective parenting, jealousy and mistrust, obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), phobias, drug and alcohol abuse, food intolerances, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, addictions, migraines and relationship problems.

To specialise with working with survivors of abuse, and to help them to find a way forward has been a journey. A journey which I, myself have made in order to heal from my own abuse. Over time, I developed this mode of healing hypnotherapy further, working instinctively and intuitively with each client to bring them the same peace that I, myself have found. I have now helped hundreds of people who have experienced childhood sexual abuse to Move Past their Past, through working with me at my hypnotherapy practice. Some of my clients have willingly contributed their stories to this book, sharing with you how they themselves healed.

Some of you will know that I am also the published author of three romantic comedy fiction books. Each contain elements of psychological growth and development, as well as spiritual and intuitive understanding weaved throughout the stories, details of which can be found on my author website:

Moving Past the Past: A Guide for Adult Survivors of Childhood Abuse is my first non-fiction, self-help book.

Below is an excerpt from my new book, taken from the Introduction.

Publication is planned for autumn 2017 and will be available in paperback and Ebook.

“If you’re reading this book, welcome! To understand the impact that childhood sexual abuse has on the adult is not an easy journey to make, but one which will, I hope, help you to finally Move Past the Past.

For the partners of survivors, or for the parents and family of survivors, this book is for you too.

Moving Past the Past will help you to understand yourself, (or your partner, child, sister or brother), in a way that you never thought possible. It will show you why you (they) behave ‘like that,’ and why you (they) react ‘like that.’ It will show you what the triggers are that create those reactions and help you to understand them. For the adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse who experience these reactions, it will show you how you can release and overcome them.

Many survivors find a lifetime of chaos, broken relationships, multiple jobs, multiple homes, destructiveness, insecurity and illness (physical, mental and emotional.) My hope for you, is that this book will help you with Moving Past the Past and into security, stability, wellness, inner peace and tranquillity; to strengthen your relationships with yourself, and with others, and to move towards a peaceful and stable life.

What’s in a name? Many object to the term ‘survivor,’ others object to the term ‘victim.’ If you are still reacting, suffering and responding to your childhood abuse, then I believe that you are still a ‘victim’ of that abuse. Once that reaction has gone, you may consider yourself to be a ‘survivor.’ For now, throughout this book, I will refer to us as, ‘Survivors.’  Whichever term you prefer, the aim of this book is to get you to the point in your life where you are neither – the name, label or definition will be irrelevant, no longer important; you are simply someone who experienced childhood sexual abuse long ago.

For us to make changes, we need first to understand – understanding is the key! To understand why we do what we do is the first step to being able to change the old patterns, reactions, responses and triggers. The journey throughout this book will help you to do just this. It is filled with studies, information, explanations, and other people’s stories, as well as exercises for you to follow.

It is my hope for you that this book will help you to find your way through the maze of destruction that being an ‘adult survivor of childhood sexual abuse’ often brings; to let it go, to find your way out of the cycle of despair and destruction, and to finally be able to ‘Move Past the Past.’

This book covers incest, grooming, trauma, PTSD, (post traumatic stress disorder), revictimisation, mental and physical health impacts and much more.

Available autumn 2017.
